RED LOCKSMITHS KNOWLEDGE CENTRE

HOME SECURITY CHECKLIST

Good security is a system rather than a single lock. Doors, frames, keys, windows, habits and maintenance all matter.

Doors and frames

Check that external doors close squarely and locks operate without excessive force. A strong lock cannot compensate for severely damaged surrounding material.

  • Inspect hinges and frames
  • Address loose hardware
  • Investigate increasing stiffness

Keys and access

Know who holds keys and review access after moving, losing identifiable keys or changing occupancy. Avoid obvious external hiding places for spare keys.

Other entry points

Review accessible windows, garages, sheds, gates and side passages. Remove obvious weaknesses while keeping the property practical to use.

Maintenance

Many failures give warning signs. A lock or handle becoming progressively harder to operate should be investigated rather than repeatedly forced.

What to know about home security

This page is designed to help customers understand home security before arranging work. Locksmith problems can look similar from the outside but have different causes, so accurate diagnosis matters. The door material, lock type, symptoms and circumstances all affect the appropriate repair.

Start with the symptoms

For home security, useful details include whether the key enters and turns, whether the handle lifts or drops normally, whether the door is open or closed, and whether the problem developed gradually or happened suddenly. With door locks, cylinders, entry points and practical security upgrades, photographs or a clear description can help identify likely parts, although a final diagnosis may require inspection.

Repair or replace?

Replacement is not automatically necessary. A locksmith may be able to adjust, repair or replace an individual component where that provides a safe and durable result. Replacement can make more sense when hardware is badly worn, damaged, obsolete, insecure or when key control needs to change. The aim should be to solve the fault without unnecessary work.

Security and lock standards

Where a lock is being replaced, ask what specification is appropriate for the door and property. British Standards, door construction, insurance requirements and the surrounding hardware can all be relevant. A high-specification cylinder alone does not correct a weak door, poor alignment or damaged frame, so the complete entry point should be considered.

Information to provide when calling

Give the property location, door type, lock type if known and a concise explanation of the problem. For an urgent lockout, say whether there is another safe point of entry and whether a key is lost, broken, locked inside or simply not operating the lock. For planned work, explain what outcome you want, such as new keys, improved security or a repair to an unreliable mechanism.

Avoiding unnecessary damage

Methods vary by lock and situation. Where appropriate, a locksmith will normally assess less destructive options before drilling or replacing hardware. No technique is suitable for every lock, and security work should only be carried out where the customer is authorised to access or alter the property.
